Western Belarus is under the rule of the Polish gentry. Panas loses all his property and finally loses hope in God. The hero comes to the city, gets hired at a coal mine and soon ends up in prison for participating in the labor movement. Thus begins the path of a proletarian revolutionary, a former peasant who has learned "on his own skin" that both in the village and in the city the poor must fight for their lives.
