Plot synopsis
Kamil (Kamil Yarmatov) is one of the best agricultural workers on the “Red Star” kolkhoz in Tajikistan. He lives happily with his wife Maryam (Sofia Tuibaeva) until the arrival of the saboteur Nuretdinov (Zhuzhunov-Nezhdanov), a former Soviet citizen who preferred to flee to a “country where Islam is sacred”. He arrives on the kolkhoz as a political educator and tries to fight against the Soviet regime by encouraging Kamil, a victim of repeated sabotage, to follow his path. This, combined with the death of his father, initially gets the better of him: not appreciating the changes to traditions and his daily life brought about by the new regime, and listening to the last piece of advice that his father – the guarantor of tradition – gives him before dying, Kamil decides to abandon his wife and leave for a country where he thinks he will find true Islam. But after staying there, he discovers the vices and inequalities of this supposedly religious society. He then decides to return to Tajikistan and will finally unmask the saboteur.
