Every day, on the stage of this old and famous theatre, Shakespeare is performed; and every day the fatal question "To be or not to be" resounds. But one day, behind the scenes, life will take it upon itself to write a tragedy. It is played out when the theatre celebrates the jubilee of the creation of this production of Hamlet. The whole town has come, including the mayor and his entourage. The tragedy begins when the young understudy of the old actor who has been playing the role without interruption for years, is languishing in the wings, sitting in the chair of his eminent colleague. It would not occur to anyone that the destinies of many actors in the theatre will be turned upside down, or even, for some, broken. For it is not only on stage, but in life that one must, in order to obtain the leading role, sacrifice this trifle: life.
