The plot is based on one of the decisive stages of the Great Patriotic War - the forcing of the Dnieper by Soviet troops in 1943. Two battalions are thrown into a disastrous breakthrough to the German-occupied bank of the river in order to divert enemy forces and thereby facilitate the division's attack on the strategically important city of Dnepr.
The main formations must support them with artillery and air fire. However, the command suddenly changes the plan of attack, leaving the battalions without fire support, thereby dooming them to certain death. Moreover, the soldiers were ordered to hold out to the last.
